This is my hotel room. I am experimenting with low light, low ISO and high shutter speed because... I got a new tripod! Well.. I meant to say, I got..my first tripod...!! Here it is. Please tell me...have you used this one? What do you think? I just got it today so am still figuring it out... tips please!

  1. Hopefully not all 3 settings at the same time Kyria - but your exposure meter will tell you that. Tripods are indispensable in most low light situations - although you can compensate somewhat with higher ISO and larger aperture (lower f-stop #). Shutter speed 'rule' is 1 over focal length for hand-held shots i.e. for a 50mm lens, 1/50 second shutter speed would be slowest before you normally get blur due to camera shake. IS (Image Stabilization) allows slower shutter speeds.

Have fun experimenting with the tripod. (no - I don't have that one, but any reasonably sturdy one will do).

  2. Hooray for new tripods! I have the sunpak 6600 dx, which is great. One rule I learned about tripods is to always put on leg directly in the front (you'll be standing between the two back legs). The first reason is so when you're moving behing your camera you won't trip on the legs as easily. The second reason is so if your tripod tips, it won't fall directly foward on to the lens of your camera. Hopefully it has the quick release thing for your camera so you don't have to keep on screwing it on and off every time you want to take your camera off. Now you can go out and do some fun night photography! Enjoy!
